Fishing Reports for week beginning 14/07/08

Beecraigs Loch Fishing Report

Has fished very well during June and some very impressive catches have been recorded. The weather has played a big part in the fishing with predominantly westerly winds with plenty of cloud cover. The water clarity is excellent and at times you could see the anchor lying on the bottom. On a lighter note fishery staff have reported seeing a pair of false teeth on the bottom of the loch some 6ft down by the boat jetty. To date no one has come forward to claim them!
By far the best tactic during the month was an intermediate or floating line fished with smallish lures/nymphs in the top 2 feet of water. Successful lure patterns have been Dancer, Nomad, Cats Whisker, Blobs, Buzzers, Hares Ear, Snatcher and Daiwl Bach have been the best nymphs. Also the Booby in its many forms has taken a lot of fish.
Davie Morrison and John Coyle from Carronshore had the best basket during June with 12 rainbows for 41lb 5oz including fish of 8lb 3oz and 5lb 7oz all on the booby. Gold Card anglers, Messrs Roy, Cook and Boyd brought to the scales 12 buzzer feeding rainbows for 29lb. Bob Rintoul and partners took several 30lb baskets during June on Black Fritz and Bobbies. Grangemouth anglers, Jimmy Allan and Jimmy Morton fished on the Loch midmonth and came in with 12 for 39lb 11oz. Jim Morton had best fish at 10lb 11oz on a Black Fritz.
A special mention this month goes to first time visitor John Burke of Dundee who had an excellent days sport and weighed in 5 good bows for 22lb 11oz, all taken on a Lime Nomad. There has been a lot of quality fish taken between 5lb to 10lb plus. Derek Beresford from Armadale weighed in a rainbow of 8lb 4oz, the fish had been hooked before on an Alexandra and had snapped the leader. Anglers have reported to staff of big fish breaking their casts like cotton. Fishery staff are advising anglers to check knots and not to fish below 8 lb b/s. Clubs have also fared well. The Last Cast Angling Club - 4 boats weighed in 43 for 114lb, several club members had taken their limit of 6 fish by lunchtime. Catch 22 Angling Club – 4 boats had 42 fish for 108lb 4oz. Falkirk Angling Club weighed in 23 fish for 74lb 2oz. Mr D. Duncan had best bag with 6 fish for 27lb 4oz on the Diawl Bach, his best fish was 9lb 11oz. Smarts the Builders Angling Club brought in 58 fish for 129lb 11oz. Willie Skene was top rod with 5 for 14lb 11oz including a good one of 7lb 2oz.

Fish of the Month goes to Mr James Morton of Carronshore for a fine triploid rainbow of 10lb 11oz. Mr Morton wins for himself a Scierra 1C3 Rod to the value of £100.00 courtesy of our sponsors for June ‘Forth Yacht Marina’ of South Lumley Street, Grangemouth.

With the mixed weather conditions and the Game Fair last weekend there was very little to report. The past week started off on the hard side but as the week progressed the fish began to play again with the weekend producing good returns. Intermediate lines and midge tips were the ultimate choice in the first part of the week but towards the end of the week the fish were moving up in the water so line choice altered to midge tips and floating lines. Fly choice was very mixed with fish being taken on very lightly dressed mini lures, Diawl Bach, Buzzers, Crunchers and even CDC Shuttlecocks. Water temperature is now ranging from 17.5’C to 17’C at three metres and water clarity is a nominal 1.5 metres.
The best areas are still the same as the past couple of weeks from the road shore down towards the lilies, tight into the reeds and also from the burn mouth to the end of the reeds on the opposite shore. Top spots at the moment though are the lily bay and the lilies to the left of burn mouth.

At the Goldenloch this past week we have had one day of moderately heavy rain which brought the level up about 2 cm, it also freshened the loch a little and has made the fishing a little bit easier as fish seem to be a lot more active in the mornings up till about 12 catches over the weekend have been good with almost everyone getting fish, and some lads like Ray Eaton, Bankfoot catching 6 all returned, Alan Gibson, Bridge of Earn, 4 all returned, A Ovens Strathmiglo 2 for 7lbs and 4 returned, best fish of the week goes to S Young, Piperdam catching a 6 lb rainbow using a mini cats whisker, however the loch is still a tad cloudy mostly due to the wind that has never stopped changing direction, with another load of fish due this week we are hoping that the water will clear soon and all the fish that are in the loch will start proper feeding giving some excellent sport.

The cooler wetter conditions which prevailed during most of the week certainly had a big effect on the trout and the fishing at Lochter Fishery Oldmeldrum. The water temperature dropped several degrees and there was less fly life on the surface. As a result the trout were much more willing to chase and were on the lookout for the small fish and other sub aquatic creatures which frequent the lochs. This gave the lure fishers a new lease of life with light coloured lures particularly the Yellow dancer and the White fritz doing outstandingly well.
Ever consistent Dave Lawrence from Mintlaw started the week in style with fourteen including one at 10lbs 4oz using a variety of big nymphs and small lures while weel kent NE angler Ron Ewen was in good form with a bag of eighteen .
As the weather deteriorated and the wind blew stronger buzzers were largely consigned to the fly box and out came the bigger stuff .D Mair had ten on a Bunny leach and Blobs while J Conroy posted a score of a dozen on Hares ears .
The White fritz was the fly which scored for F Sclater,R Patient and S Gatt but it was the Dancer which outshone them all tantalising ten for R Cowie, and fascinating fourteen including the fish of the week a super sixteen pounder for Pete Todd back home in Aberdeen from Australia. After his success I can reveal that Pete had quite a few tinnies with his pals to celebrate
The weather has settled back to more like summer again and the fishing should be much more consistent during the week. The school holidays are now under way and it is nice to see lots of youngsters out fishing and enjoying the beauties of the countryside.

There was a great deal of surface activity all week with fish being seen moving and feeding near the top of the water. After the heavy overnight rain midweek freshened things up, the fishing improved towards the weekend. Small black flies were doing particularly well, fished on or just below the surface. The fish are still looking to chase and therefore flies need to be retrieved to attract their attention. A wide variety of nymphs, wets and dries were working this week. Favourite patterns included Snatchers, Buzzers, Bibio, Kate McLaren, Diawl Bach, PTN, Hopper, Sedge, and Muddler. If the sun was out and it was very bright, very small lures fished 1 to 2 feet below the surface were working well especially if they had a bit of sparkle in them.
One double figure Rainbow features in this week's best bags along with a good selection of the other varieties currently being stocked. Best bags included Patrick Conn, Airdrie, 10lb 11oz Rainbow, Craig Irvine, Falkirk, 3 for 18lb 8oz including 8lb 2oz Rainbow and 7lb 12oz Rainbow, Danny Doherty, Denny, 3 for 14lb 8oz including 9lb 4oz Rainbow, Alex Knox, Glasgow, 2 for 8lb 4oz including 6lb Blue and Ronnie Loos, Stirling, 2 Blues for 9lb bigger one at 6lb 13oz. Gary Devine, Stirling, 4 for 9lb 12oz from the small ponds including a 5lb Blue. Mark Sullivan, Alexandria, 5 for 13lb 4oz including 3 Browns, Stewart Sutherland, Cumbernauld, 4 for 12lb 12oz including a Brown and Archie McClymont, Glasgow, 2 for 6lb including a Blue.
